What you need to know about gulf seafood

Enjoying fresh gulf seafood is one of the best things about taking a vacation to the Alabama Gulf Coast. In addition, experts recommend eating seafood at least twice a week because of the health benefits.

Fish and shellfish are wonderful (and delicious) sources of protein. Eating three ounces of seafood a day provides more than 50 percent of the necessary protein for an adult. As if you needed an excuse to indulge while at the beach . . .

Oysters, red snapper, grouper and flounder also contain omega-3 fatty acids – the good kind of fat.

Fish such as tuna contain plenty of vitamins A and D, and fish are also great sources of vitamin B.

All seafood is low in both total fat and saturated fat, so shrimp, crab, flounder, mahi mahi and tuna are great dishes to help lower the fat (and sodium) in your diet.
